About Waiting
A young woman sits on the edge of a dark bench or ledge, her body turned slightly to the left and her face tilted down so the wide brim of a straw-coloured hat hides her eyes. She wears a pale cream slip dress with thin straps, painted in long sweeping strokes that leave the canvas weave showing through. Her arms and legs are modelled in tan and warm brown, one leg crossed over the other, one hand resting near her knee. The background is a wash of ivory and ochre with a vertical smear of deeper yellow at the upper right.
Thin scribbled lines, like pencil loops, cut across the shoulders, skirt and the space beside the figure, keeping the whole picture loose and unfinished on purpose. The mood is quiet and self-contained, warm rather than dramatic.
Suits bedrooms, dressing rooms, hallways and boutique-style interiors with cream, linen or oatmeal walls. The ochre and tan tones sit well with oak or rattan furniture, brass lamps and neutral rugs. Hang it above a bedhead, a hall console or a chest of drawers where the pale background can breathe. Browse more women in art, people and figures, earthy tones.
