A grey wolf faces the viewer head-on in a detailed graphite pencil drawing. Its ears are upright, its pale amber eyes are sharp and steady, and its dark nose sits above a slightly upturned mouth. Each strand of fur along the cheeks, ruff and neck is shaded in short directional strokes, so the coat looks thick and layered.
Behind the wolf, a winter woodland fades into soft, pale vertical lines of slender birch trunks. Snow banks fill the left side, and rounded rocks and a small stream bank sit at the lower right. The whole scene is drawn in black, grey and white, with the darkest tones in the wolf's face and the lightest in the untouched snow. A signature and date appear in the bottom right corner.
