About Vatnajokull Falls

A wide river canyon fills the frame, with a row of waterfalls pouring over a stepped basalt ledge on the right and dropping into a pale, churning pool. A long exposure has smoothed the moving water into soft white ribbons and streaks, while the rock stays sharp: dark boulders in the foreground, rust and ochre staining on the cliff faces, and patches of moss and low tundra along the rim. The sun sits low on the horizon at the centre, flaring white.

Above it the sky burns orange and red, the cloud bands drawn out in long streaks that deepen to navy blue at the top corners. Cool blue-grey water and warm sunlit rock sit against each other, and the canyon walls on the left run away into haze.
