About Winning Horse
Four racehorses come straight at the viewer, filling the lower half of a portrait canvas. The three leaders are painted in dark brown, near-black and plum, legs blurred mid-stride, with a paler grey horse tucked behind. Jockeys crouch low in silks of orange, gold, blue and white, one helmet capped bright orange, another pale blue, whips raised against a smudged grey sky. The track underfoot breaks into slabs of apricot, white and pale blue, with a running rail and distant fence sketched in on both sides.
Everything is laid on with a palette knife in thick, flat facets, so manes, silks and churned ground all read as ridges of paint rather than drawn detail. The effect is speed and noise caught at the moment the field turns for home.
Suits a games room, bar area or home office with a racing or sporting theme, and works above a leather sofa or sideboard. The orange and ochre notes lift grey, charcoal or timber walls. Pair with dark timber furniture, brass lamps and a plain rug so the busy brushwork has room to breathe. Browse more sports and games room art, contemporary art, multi-coloured art.
