Why inspirational art

A phrase on canvas has to survive being read a thousand times

The pieces that last are the ones whose colour and composition hold up long after the words have stopped registering.

Most people choose a worded print for the sentence and regret it for the same reason. You read it properly for about a fortnight, then it becomes furniture. So judge it the way you would judge an abstract: does the colour work with the room, is the composition balanced, would you still like it with the letters blurred out? If yes, the message is a bonus rather than the whole job.

Lettering needs width. Under about 60cm the words crowd and the piece starts to look like signage, so go 90cm or wider on a main wall and hang the centre at eye level, roughly 145cm off the floor. One worded piece per room is plenty; a second reads as competing advice. Pair it instead with a floral or an abstract that shares two colours, and keep at least 6cm of clear wall around each edge.
