Loud colour, laid on by hand

Why pop art

Flat saturated colour reads from across a room, so small pop art disappears

The whole effect depends on the colour field filling your vision, and a modest canvas simply cannot do that.

Pop art started as printmaking, so the obvious question is what a hand-painted version adds. The answer is at the colour boundaries. Where a print gives you a clean mechanical edge, oil on canvas leaves a slight ridge where one field meets the next, and you can see the direction the brush travelled across each block. Stand a metre away and the image is graphic. Stand close and it is plainly a painting.

Go one size up from your instinct. Over a three-seater sofa, 120 to 150cm wide is the honest minimum, and hang it low, around 20 to 25cm above the back cushions. Keep the wall plain white or pale grey, since patterned wallpaper fights flat colour and both lose. One saturated piece per sightline is plenty. Pull a single colour out of the painting, repeat it once in a cushion or throw, and stop there.
