Still life was made for close walls, not big open rooms
The detail that makes these pictures worth owning — a bruised petal, light caught on glass — vanishes past about three metres.
Still life has always been close-range painting. It was hung in dining rooms and studies, at eye level, where people passed within a metre of it and could see the water beading on a petal or the light caught in a glass rim. Put one four metres away above a lounge and all that detail collapses into a blur of colour. Hallways, stair landings, reading corners and dining walls are where these pieces earn their keep.
Over a sideboard, aim for a canvas about two-thirds the width of the furniture, with the bottom edge 20 to 25 cm above the top. Anything under 60 cm wide on a broad wall will look stranded. Watch the background: many still lifes sit on a dark or olive ground, and on stark white plasterboard that block of darkness reads as a hole. A warm wall, a grouping, or a second piece nearby fixes it.
