About Cascade in Blue and Rust
The canvas is built from tall vertical bands that run the full height of the picture. At the left, rust orange and dark red streaks sit against black; the centre holds a column of near-black flanked by white, and the right side moves into mid blue and turquoise. Through the middle, three broken pillars of pale cream and ochre crust break the smooth washes with thick, crumbling texture. Fine paint runs drip downward from these patches, some rust coloured, some white, tracing thin lines to the bottom edge.
The lower third softens into brushed teal and grey, as though the colour has been pulled down and thinned. It reads as weathered rock or water falling in low light: quiet at the base, busy and mineral through the centre.
The upright shape suits a narrow wall, a stairwell landing or the space beside a doorway. The teal and rust sit well with grey or charcoal sofas, natural timber and brass or copper fittings.
