About Abacus
A slab of pale gold and cream shapes sits in the centre of a deep red field, painted so it reads like weathered stone or a folded scroll with torn, irregular edges. Across its lower left corner lies a dark timber abacus, tilted on an angle, its beads picked out in small black and amber dots inside a narrow olive-brown frame. A second upright bar in mottled green and grey stands at the top right, and faint columns of script-like marks run down the middle panel.
The red background is worked with a palette knife into ridges and shallow troughs that catch light across the whole surface, while a soft dark halo separates the pale forms from the red. The mood is quiet and archaeological: a small everyday counting tool treated like a relic set against a bold, saturated wall of colour.
The strong red suits a neutral room that needs one point of colour: a white or grey hallway, a dining wall above a dark timber sideboard, or an office behind a desk. It works with black metal, walnut and rattan, and pairs well with Asian ceramics, brass lamps or a simple linen sofa in oatmeal. Browse more brown and earthy art, red art.
