About African Women
A single elongated figure stands in the left foreground, seen from behind, balancing a round terracotta pot on her head with one raised arm. She wears a deep red wrap over a cobalt blue skirt flecked with small pale marks. Behind her the ground runs from cream through ochre to warm gold, and a broad band of flat red fills the upper third like a heat-struck sky. Four smaller figures, one in tall yellow with a pot, recede to the right beside a patch of violet and plum.
The mood is quiet and heat-heavy, the figures reduced to slender silhouettes with no facial detail. Paint is dragged and scraped in horizontal strokes across the sand, with raised impasto ridges on the pot, the robe and the lower ground that catch light at an angle.
The flat red band and gold ground suit hotel lobbies, reception walls and dining rooms with white or oatmeal paint. It works above a dark timber sideboard or a tan leather sofa, and pairs with woven baskets, terracotta pots and brass lamps. The cobalt skirt gives a link to blue cushions or ceramics.
