About Back Bend
A single ballerina stands on the point of one foot at the lower centre of the frame, her body arched backwards into a deep curve so that her head tilts away and both arms reach out to the right. She wears a fitted bodice and a short, softly pleated skirt that catches the light in pale silver, blue and grey folds. Her skin is lit warmly along the shoulder, spine and supporting leg, while everything behind her falls into unbroken black. A faint reflection glimmers on the dark floor beneath the pointe shoe.
The character of the work is quiet and controlled: one lit figure, a black surround, and the tension of a held balance on a single toe.
Suits bedrooms, dressing rooms, hallways and a home office where a dark, calm wall works. The black ground reads well against white or pale grey paint, and pairs with charcoal linen, brushed silver or nickel fittings, a mirrored surface and warm lamp light.
