About Bike Ride I
A side-on bicycle fills the width of a long horizontal panel, drawn entirely in loose watercolour washes on a bare white background. Both wheels sit at either end of the composition, their rims blotched with red, orange, lime green, turquoise and violet, while fine dark spokes radiate from each hub in crisp lines. The frame, handlebars, saddle, chain and pedal crank are sketched in the same wet pigment, with the crank ring rendered in warm orange and pink. Colour runs past the outlines in places, leaving drips and soft-edged bleeds.
The character is light and graphic: a precise mechanical subject broken up by free, spattered colour, so the bicycle reads clearly from a distance yet dissolves into washes up close. Nothing competes with it, as the white ground is left completely empty.
The long, narrow shape suits a hallway wall, a stairway landing, or the space above a bed head or sofa. Its white ground works with pale walls, oak and white furniture, and keeps a kids' room or home office bright without clutter. Pair it with a second cycling print or simple black-framed photographs.
