About Blue Dance II

A single open bloom fills most of this square composition, its petals fanning out from a slightly off-centre core. The washes run from deep teal at the petal edges to pale, watery blue where the pigment has spread and dried with visible tide lines. Warm grey-brown strokes sit through the centre and at the base of the petals, giving the flower weight. A thin grey stem curves down from the lower right of the bloom and runs off the bottom edge, with a few loose leaf marks beside it.

The background is left as bare cream-white, so the flower appears to float, with faint drips and softened outer petals blurring into the paper. Its character is quiet and unfussy, more a suggestion of a flower than a botanical study, with enough teal to hold a wall on its own.
