About Boots
The canvas is split into two broad zones. The upper third is a washed band of grey-blue and warm grey, brushed in long horizontal strokes, with thinned dusty red drips and small round blots bleeding downward. The lower two thirds is a flat sweep of ochre gold, streaked with faint vertical brush marks. Between them sits a cluster of blocky forms in black, deep maroon and bright red, some squared off like upturned boots, with cream and pale pink patches wedged between. Squares of gold leaf catch light near the top and along the base.
Thin dark lines shoot up from the cluster like wires, and one shape is scored with a small grid of parallel scratches. Paint is heavy in the dark blocks and scraped thin across the gold field, so texture varies sharply across the surface. The character is bold and graphic, with a quiet, open lower half that keeps the busy middle band from crowding the wall.
Works above a dark timber sideboard or a leather sofa in a living room, and holds a narrow entry or stairwell wall well in portrait format. The ochre field suits warm neutrals, tan leather, brass lamps and charcoal cushions; the red and black blocks sharpen a plain white or pale grey wall.
