About Bosom
A woman's torso fills the centre of this upright canvas, cropped from the top of her head to the hips. Her face is turned down and away, largely dissolved into shadow, with dark brown hair falling across one shoulder. The body is modelled in warm cream and blush tones, softly blurred at the edges so the figure appears to emerge from the surrounding wash. Around her the ground is a mottled field of oatmeal, pale ochre and rust brown, broken by flecks of gold leaf and thin white scratches.
Lines of loose, illegible handwriting run across the upper left, lower centre and right edge, along with a small circular stamp-like motif near the bottom right corner. The paint is worked thinly in places and scraped back in others, leaving a chalky, weathered surface. Character: quiet and restrained, more about atmosphere and aged texture than anatomy.
Suits a main bedroom, ensuite or dressing area where the warm neutrals can sit against pale plaster, limewash or oak panelling. Works above a linen bedhead or a timber chest of drawers, and pairs with brass lamps, aged mirrors and stone or ceramic vessels. The soft palette also sits well in a hallway with low, warm lighting.
