About Bridge
A narrow canal runs from the lower left corner into the middle distance, where a low arched stone bridge with a pale balustrade crosses the water. A single moored boat sits in the shadow beneath the arch, and timber mooring poles break the surface in the foreground. Tall rendered houses in ochre, terracotta and olive line the left bank, their green shutters and small balconies catching warm light. On the right, a paved terrace of pinkish stone leads to steps, a blue and white striped awning and a canopied shopfront.
Colour is laid on thickly with a palette knife, so the render on the walls, the piled clouds and the beds of pink and red flowers all sit raised off the canvas. The mood is a bright, unhurried afternoon in a small Mediterranean canal town, warm rather than dramatic.
Suits a dining room, hallway or open kitchen with timber, rattan or terracotta tiles. The ochre and teal read well against cream, sage or warm white walls. Pairs with a long dining table, a sideboard of ceramics, or other Mediterranean canal and village scenes in a grouped hallway display. Browse more Mediterranean art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
