Four dahlia heads are drawn in fine black parallel lines on a white ground. One sits at the top left, a large one fills the right edge, a third sits at the centre, and a fourth is tucked into the bottom left corner. The petals are built from closely spaced strokes that follow each curve, so the flowers read as engraved rather than shaded.
Loose washes of watercolour sit under and across the line work. A saturated cobalt blue pools at the lower left and centre, while burnt orange and soft amber spread across the top and right. Where the colours overlap the petals, lines show through. The pigment edges are uneven and blotchy, and a generous area of white is left open at the lower right.
