About Drawing Compass
A pair of drawing dividers hangs dead centre of the composition, suspended from a small metal ring, its two hinged legs tapering to dark points near the lower third of the picture. Behind it sits a collage of aged paper: columns of small nineteenth-century newsprint, a signed letter ending in "Yours truly", a shaded circular diagram, a printed table of figures down the left edge, and a fragment reading "OF MAN'S BODY". The lower right corner shows a map panel labelled "Quadrant" with ruled grid lines.
The palette stays within warm sepia, tea-stained beige and cream, with the compass itself in cool grey and near-black. Torn edges, scuffs, foxing marks and faint ghosted lettering give the surface a layered, well-handled look, and a date of 1869 is legible in bold type at the lower left. The character is quiet and scholarly: an instrument of measurement floating above the printed record, more archive drawer than decoration.
Suits a home office, study or reading corner where books, timber shelving and brass desk fittings already sit. Works above a writing desk or filing cabinet, and pairs well with framed maps, botanical plates or architectural drawings. The sepia tones settle easily against white, putty or olive walls and warm oak or leather furniture.
