A large bull elk stands side-on at the left, head raised and antlers sweeping up in a pale, many-pointed spread. His coat is a warm tawny brown, darker and shaggier across the neck and chest, with slim legs planted on short grass. At the right, a cow elk lies with her legs tucked under her, ears alert, looking back toward the bull.
The setting is an open green meadow with small patches of bare earth and tufts of grass in the foreground. Behind them, a few more elk graze in the middle distance, and soft blue hills fade into a pale sky. Trees with grey-green foliage sit on the right. It is a vintage natural-history illustration on a white ground, with printed Latin and English captions along the bottom edge, a plate number at the top right and a small number at the top left.
