About Embark
A gondola crosses the foreground water, a standing oarsman in dark red leaning into his oar while four seated passengers cluster in the hull. Behind them the far bank carries a tall red-brick bell tower with a pale stone belfry and grey spire, a low green-grey dome, and a classical church front flanked by ochre and cream buildings. A small rust-coloured sail sits at the left edge. The sky is worked in broad grey-blue and white strokes, with warm light breaking near the horizon.
Paint is laid on thickly with a knife, so the water reads as short horizontal ridges of blue, cream and pale green, broken by smeared reflections of the buildings and the boat. The overall mood is calm and slightly overcast, more about light on water than architectural detail.
Suits a dining room, entry hall or living room with cream, grey or pale timber walls. The blue-grey water and terracotta tower sit well with linen upholstery, brass lamps and dark timber furniture. Works as a single square piece above a sideboard, a fireplace or a two-seater sofa. Browse more Mediterranean art, blue art, people and figures.
