About Flow II

The image is built from three horizontal bands of diluted watercolour. The upper third is a near-white sky broken by drifting grey-blue clouds with hard-edged wash lines where the pigment has pooled and dried. Across the centre sits a low range of dark slate hills, capped by a single thin, almost black line that reads as the far shore. Below it a broad sheet of cornflower blue water fades from saturated at the horizon to milky pale, with soft blooms and back-runs spreading through it.

The lower quarter shifts to warm brown and taupe, a sandy foreshore painted in overlapping washes with darker sienna streaks pulling across the grain. White paper is left bare between the bands, so the picture breathes. Its character is quiet and cool, a rain-light coastal scene reduced to water, land and weather with nothing sharp in it.
