About Gilded Map Grey
A world map fills the canvas in landscape format, the continents rendered in weathered gold with cool silver-blue patches through North America, Europe and central Africa. The background is a flat charcoal grey carrying faint pale lines of latitude, longitude and old shipping routes that fan out across the oceans. A compass rose sits in the lower left near South America, marked N, S, E and W in thin cream lettering. Edges of the landmasses are ragged rather than precise.
The gold surface looks like leaf that has been laid down and then rubbed back, so flecks of grey show through and the metallic areas read as worn and uneven. Vertical streaks run down Asia and Africa where the gilding thins. The overall character is quiet and decorative rather than geographic: a map used as a texture study in metallics on a dark neutral field.
Works in a home office above a desk, a dining room sideboard, or a living room with charcoal, navy or warm grey walls.
