A small white rowing boat sits alone on a wide expanse of golden sand, set just below the centre of the frame. Its pale hull casts a soft shadow, and the sand around it is streaked with ripples and shallow shifts of ochre, amber and lemon yellow. The brushy, smooth surface gives it the feel of a realist painting.
Across the far side of the flat, a cluster of white cabins with dark roofs stands on a low headland at the left, beside a small pool of still water. A dark band of sea runs along the horizon with tiny white sails dotted across it. Above, the sky fades from lilac blue at the top to warm cream and yellow near the horizon, with one thin purple cloud.
