About Gondola
A narrow canal runs from the foreground into the distance, closed off by a low stone bridge and a pale building with a small tiled tower. Tall rendered houses crowd both banks: on the left, terracotta roofs and a mass of yellow-green climbing foliage spilling over a brick retaining wall; on the right, an ochre facade with green louvred shutters and red flowers on the sills. Two dark timber gondolas sit moored, one on each bank, their prows lifted slightly out of the water.
The water is the centre of the painting, worked in broken horizontal strokes of teal, green and cream that catch reflected walls and a patch of sky. Above, soft blue and warm cloud is brushed loosely, and mortar lines, peeling render and stonework are built up in thick, dragged paint. The mood is quiet and mid-morning still, a working back canal rather than a grand waterfront.
Suits a hallway, stairwell or dining room where the vertical view down the canal draws the eye along. The teal water and ochre render sit well with timber furniture, cane, linen and terracotta pots. Good above a sideboard or console in warm neutral or cream rooms, and a natural pair with other Mediterranean scenes. Browse more Mediterranean art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
