About Hong Kong Backstreet II
A tall concrete tenement fills the right side of the frame, its floors stacked with sliding windows, window-mounted air conditioners and metal security grilles streaked with water stains. On the left, a large curved neon sign juts out from the wall, outlined in yellow tubing with white Chinese characters set on a deep red field. The rooftop bristles with a thicket of thin television aerials, and the sky behind is a heavy slate blue, clouded and textured like old film grain.
The contrast carries the picture: warm red and amber light against cold blue cloud and grey render. It reads as a quiet, slightly gritty night-into-dusk street scene rather than a postcard view.
Suits a living room, home office or hallway with concrete, charcoal or timber surfaces, and works well above a dark sideboard or a leather chair.
