About The Jumper
A horse's head and neck fill most of this portrait composition, drawn with fast, tangled black ink lines that loop over the mane and spill into open scribbles at the top right. The body of the animal is left as a pale, chalky white shape, so the form reads more as a gap in the background than a filled figure. Around it sit blocks of soft grey, taupe, rust brown and dense black, laid in rectangles with scraped, distressed edges that show flecks and scuffing across the surface.
The effect is quick and unfinished in the best way: a few dozen nervous lines catch the angle of the head, the ear and the flick of the mane, while the rest is left to the viewer. Restrained colour and heavy texture keep it graphic rather than decorative.
Works in a hallway, study or bedroom where the palette runs to white walls, grey linen and timber. The rust and charcoal blocks pick up leather armchairs, tan hide rugs and black metal frames.
