About Golden Birch Grove
A stand of slender birches fills the canvas, their pale white-grey trunks leaning at slightly different angles so the spaces between them form narrow wedges of sky. The canopy across the top is built from thousands of small knife-laid dabs in gold, amber and orange, with cooler white and pale green flecks catching the light. Behind the trunks the background is brushed in soft teal and grey-blue, with faint ghosted saplings suggested in thin orange lines through the haze.
The forest floor is a carpet of rust and orange, dotted with individual leaf strokes that sit up off the surface. Loose leaves are shown mid-fall between the trunks. The painting reads as bright and busy up close, calm and orderly from across the room, thanks to the vertical rhythm of the trunks.
Works above a sofa in a living room with grey or pale timber walls, where the gold canopy warms a cool colour scheme. Suits a dining room end wall, a wide hallway, or a bedroom over the bedhead.
