A black and white photograph of a rider in a wide-brimmed hat sitting on a dark horse, both in near-silhouette on the crest of a low rise. The horse stands side-on with its head lowered and turned toward the viewer, and the rider leans slightly forward, looking down.
To the left a bare, many-branched tree stands against the sky, its fine twigs sharp against the pale grey. Spiky yucca-like plants fill the right foreground, and a light dusting of snow marks the stony ground. The sky is an even, foggy grey that darkens toward the corners, giving the scene a heavy, quiet mood.
