About Lonesome
A woman sits side-on in a tall, narrow composition, filling most of the canvas. She wears a rust-red three-quarter-sleeve dress and a wide-brimmed hat in deeper burgundy with a rolled band and small side knot. The brim tips forward and shadows her eyes completely, so only her nose, painted lips and chin catch light. A short beaded necklace sits at her throat. One hand rests near her knee, the other arm crosses her lap, and a bare leg extends to the lower right.
The background is built from flat blocks of warm grey, mauve and near-black, with a heavily stippled, plaster-like texture that contrasts with the smoother modelling of skin and fabric. The mood is quiet and self-contained, a figure caught mid-thought rather than posing for the viewer.
The tall, narrow shape suits a hallway end, a stairwell wall, the space beside a wardrobe or between two doorways. Rust red and warm grey work with charcoal sofas, oak floors, linen bedheads and brass lamps. Hang it alone in a bedroom or entry where a wide painting will not fit.
