About Rainbow Rider II
The painting shows the back half of an upright vintage bicycle, cropped so the frame runs off the left edge and the rear wheel fills the lower right. The tubing is painted in overlapping strokes of red, cobalt blue, violet and yellow rather than one flat colour, and the wheel rim carries the same broken bands. Thin orange, blue and grey lines fan out as spokes from a small yellow hub. The saddle sits high at the top left, built from thick black impasto ridges with yellow and red showing through.
Everything is set against a plain off-white ground with faint grey shadow, so the colour does all the work. The mood is graphic and cheerful, closer to a poster than a portrait of a machine.
Suits a hallway, home office or teenager's room, and works well in a garage conversion or bike-minded household. The off-white ground sits easily on white or pale grey walls, while the red and cobalt pick up primary-coloured cushions, black metal shelving and timber furniture. Hang it as a single square above a bench or desk. Browse more pop art, popular art, square paintings.
