About Lady in the Blue Hat
A woman is shown from the shoulders up against a plain pale grey ground, her face hidden entirely beneath the tilted brim of a wide sun hat. The brim is built from charcoal and white strokes with thick turquoise slabs laid on with a palette knife, the ridges catching light along the front edge. Clusters of small shapes trim the crown and one side: green dots, an orange bar, a checked brown ribbon, purple and red patches, with looping black line work rising above like feathers.
Her neck is painted in flat white and grey planes, ringed by a beaded band of green, tan and blue. The shoulders and collar are white with black and grey shadow strokes and a small confetti of coloured squares at the left. Bold, graphic and cheerful, it reads as a race-day figure reduced to shape and colour rather than likeness.
Suits an entry hall, dressing room, bedroom or a hairdressing and boutique fit-out. The pale grey ground sits quietly on white or soft grey walls, while the turquoise hat lifts a room with teal cushions, brass lighting or pale timber. Good above a console table or a low chest of drawers. Browse more women in art, pop art, square paintings.
