About Masquerade
A masked figure fills the canvas, built from interlocking curved planes of burnt orange, deep blue and magenta. The face is a pale cream oval with one slanted almond eye and a long nose, tilted to the right as if listening. Below it, a small white hand rests on the strings of a harp-like instrument whose orange arc and fine dark string lines run up the left side. Striped red-and-white wedges fan out behind the head, and a mottled blue field forms the upper background.
The surface is heavily worked, with crusty impasto and speckled colour breaking through each flat shape, so the whole picture reads as textured mosaic rather than smooth painting. Its character is festive and slightly theatrical, a carnival musician caught mid-note.
Works in a living room with white or charcoal walls, above a sideboard or a low sofa, where the orange and magenta can carry the room. Suits eclectic and Mediterranean interiors, timber furniture, woven rugs and terracotta pots. Hang it alone rather than in a group, and keep nearby pieces plain.
