About Winding Valley River
A pale blue river runs from the top of the canvas down through the centre, narrowing in the distance and swelling into a broad curve in the foreground before bending left. On the right, a mass of very dark green foliage rises against a bank of warm orange ochre, with small flecks of yellow-green suggesting leaves. On the left, olive and lime green ridges sit above a slope of deep yellow where a few bare, thin trees stand over a patch of blue-black shadow. A cream and white shape, reading as a small roofed structure with a marked-out roofline, sits low on the left bank.
Colour is laid down in flat, simple areas with soft-edged transitions rather than fine detail, and the sky is a thin wash of pale blue and cream. The brushwork is smooth through the water and drier and more broken across the yellow grass. The overall character is calm and decorative, a landscape reduced to curves and blocks of warm and cool colour.
Works well above a sideboard in a dining room, in a hallway, or over a low bed in a guest room. The ochre and olive tones sit comfortably with timber furniture, rattan and linen in oatmeal or sage. Hang it against a white or warm grey wall so the pale blue river reads clearly from across the room. Browse more landscape oil paintings, the Statton Collection, earthy tones.
