About Evening Confidantes
Two tall, simplified figures stand at the left of the canvas, their bodies painted as narrow white cones that taper to thin black legs. Dark brush-loaded strokes form their heads and the line of their shoulders, with a wedge of ochre separating them. To the right sits a pale table carrying two small cups and a tall slim bottle, set against a white arch shape on an ochre band. The lower right holds a block of charcoal and rust over soft orange.
The background is worked in dry, scrubbed layers of cream, grey-blue and sand, with the paint dragged so the weave of the canvas shows through. A long black line sweeps across the floor beneath the figures, tying the two halves together. It reads as a quiet scene of two people standing beside a laid table, reduced to shape, line and warm neutral colour.
Suits a dining room above a sideboard, a hallway with pale walls, or a bedroom where the ochre and grey can sit against linen and timber. Pairs with oak or walnut furniture, woven rugs, ceramic vessels and brushed silver or black metal lighting. The square format works well over a low console or between two doorways.
