About Mystification One
The canvas is divided into four uneven blocks: deep oxblood red at the top right and lower left, near-black brown at the top left and lower right. Where the blocks meet, a rough square of gold leaf sits slightly off centre, flanked by two small white patches. Three red squares climb the upper dividing line, and a coiled spiral with a crossed line is scratched into the top right field. A large ridged disc, painted in grey and ochre rings, hangs over the top left corner.
Surface texture carries the work: thick paste ridges, incised crosses and circles in the lower left, and a combed band of vertical grooves under three chalky white squares at the bottom right. The mood is quiet and archaeological, more like a weathered wall or unearthed tablet than a bright decorative abstract.
Suits a bedroom with charcoal or oatmeal linen, a hallway with dark timber, or a lounge above a leather sofa. The red blocks lift warm neutrals, terracotta and burnt orange cushions, while the black fields hold their own against brick, concrete render or stained floorboards. Works well lit from one side so the raised texture shows. Browse more abstract oil paintings, all hand-painted oil paintings.
