About Nirvana
Cream stucco villas with terracotta tiled roofs climb the left side of the picture, their arched windows shaded and their walls half-hidden by climbing greenery. A flight of worn stone steps runs up the centre between low rendered walls, leading to a white timber railing at the terrace edge. Palms lean in from both sides, two slim trunks on the right framing the view. Beyond the wall the bay opens out in bands of deep cobalt and lighter turquoise, with small white sails scattered near a hazy blue headland and a pale, clouded sky above.
Flowerbeds of red, pink, white and blue blossom crowd the foreground walls, laid on in thick dabs of paint with a knife so the petals stand off the canvas. The painting has a warm, unhurried holiday feel, built on the contrast between heavy textured foliage and the smooth, flat calm of the water.
Suits a living room, dining room or hallway with white or sandy walls, and works well above a sideboard or a linen sofa. Pairs with timber furniture, cane chairs, terracotta pots and blue-and-white ceramics. The square format sits neatly on a chimney breast or between two windows in a coastal-style home.
