About On the Highlands
Five whitewashed windmills stand along a low stony ridge under a wide, almost cloudless sky that shifts from soft grey-blue at the horizon to a deeper blue at the top. The largest mill sits right of centre, its cylindrical white tower topped by a rust-orange conical roof and a dark lattice of eight sail frames. A second mill at the far right carries a slate-blue cap, while three smaller mills recede to the left, growing paler and cooler with distance.
The foreground is built up in heavy paint: a brown and ochre stone wall or cobbled track is worked in thick looped strokes, with palette-knife ridges describing rock and dry earth across the ridge. Tower walls are scraped in flat, chalky whites so the canvas weave shows through. Quiet and sunlit rather than dramatic, it reads as a still afternoon in dry hill country, with the sail frames drawn in fine dark lines against the sky. Signed in the lower right corner.
Suits a dining room, hallway or living room with white or limewashed walls, timber furniture and woven or rattan pieces. The rust roof and ochre foreground sit well with terracotta tiles, linen upholstery and brass lamps. Hang it above a sideboard or long console so the run of windmills reads across the wall.
