About Red Watercolour

Vertical bands of watercolour run the full height of the canvas, edge to edge, like a screen of thin trunks in a dense grove. Teal and forest green dominate the left and centre, crossed by warm mustard, apricot and soft pink, with two darker columns in charcoal grey and one deep red stripe that widens into a blotted, mottled shape near the middle. Thin ink lines wander diagonally across the lower left, and the white ground shows through everywhere as breathing space between the colours.

The texture is all watery: soft feathered edges, streaky pooling where pigment has settled, pale wash haloes and fine spatter flecks. Its character is airy and unforced, colourful without being loud, and it reads as trees from a distance and as pure colour up close.

Suits a living room above a low sideboard, a bedroom over the bedhead, or a home office wall that needs colour without a strong subject.
