About Roman Numerals I
A square, tightly cropped view of an old clock dial fills the frame. Three Roman numerals dominate: XI at the upper left, VII at the right and VIII along the bottom, all rendered in mustard and amber gold with flaking, mottled edges. Behind them the dial is almost black, streaked with charcoal, rust brown and grey patches of corrosion. Two dark iron hands cross the upper half, and a ladder-like ring of gold minute markers curves down the right-hand edge.
The character here is aged and industrial: an ordinary clock face enlarged until the wear, grime and chipped gilding become the subject. It reads as graphic and bold from across a room, then breaks into texture and decay up close.
Suits a home office, study or dining room with dark timber, leather or black metal furniture. It works in industrial and vintage-styled living rooms, and above a sideboard or desk.
