About Rome Spanish Stairs

The view looks upward from the foot of the Spanish Steps in Rome. A tall Egyptian obelisk stands at the centre on a square stone plinth, its tip capped with a small cross and star. To the right, the twin bell towers and pedimented facade of the church rise steeply against the sky. Along the left, a row of shuttered apartment buildings with iron balconies and a street lamp recedes into the distance, with a dome and lantern visible further back.

Colour sits in warm beige, ochre and sandy brown for the stonework, set against a sky of soft blue washed with pale green and cream. The whole image carries a heavy overlay of crackle, paper creases and mottled staining, so the buildings look like a photograph printed on an old, weathered wall. Its character is nostalgic and slightly faded, more memory of Rome than postcard of it.
