A large rooster fills the middle of the picture, seen side-on with its head turned up and to the right. The red comb and wattle are the brightest marks in the scene. The chest and neck are a pale cream-yellow, washed thin so the paper shows through, while the back fades into soft grey-blue shadow.
The tail sweeps down the left side in layered strokes of teal, navy and deep blue. Yellow lilies with orange-brown centres crowd around the bird's feet and on the right edge, set against loose green foliage with fine dark splatters. It reads as a watercolour, with soft blended washes, visible paper edges and a small signature at the lower right.
