About Rouge Chic
A woman fills the canvas, her face half hidden beneath the sweeping brim of a red hat covered in even rows of white dots. The brim cuts a long diagonal across the top of the picture, leaving only the nose, cheek and mouth in light. Her lips are painted in strong crimson, and one hand rests against her cheek with four red-lacquered nails repeating that same note. Everything else is worked in greys, charcoal and chalky white, with a red scarf falling down the left shoulder.
The paint is loose and visibly brushed, with vertical drags of grey and white behind the figure and a dark band of hair melting into the background. Only three things carry colour: the hat, the mouth and the nails. That restraint gives the picture its poise, cool and graphic, with a hint of held-back glamour.
Suits a dressing room, bedroom, hallway or the wall behind a salon reception desk. The grey and charcoal ground sits well with white walls, black metal frames and pale timber, while the red hat picks up cushions, a red chair or lacquered accessories.
