About Rowing the Boat
A single black gondola sits low in the foreground, its prow curving up to the right, with a pale blue folded cover across the seat. Behind it a gondolier stands in silhouette, dark and simplified, leaning into the oar. Slim timber mooring poles rise from the water at uneven angles, scattered across the whole width of the canvas. The lagoon is painted in cobalt and ultramarine with broken white and pale blue strokes running horizontally to catch the light. A domed skyline dissolves into soft grey haze along the horizon.
The handling is loose and wet-looking, with ragged dark edges where the hull meets the water and dry-brushed streaks across the ripples. The upper third stays almost empty: flat washes of pale blue and cream sky above a barely-drawn church profile. It reads as a quiet, backlit moment rather than a postcard view, with strong dark shapes set against cool light.
Suits a hallway, stairwell or bedroom wall where the tall format has room above eye level. The cobalt and black work against white, pale grey or soft sand walls, and sit well with timber furniture, linen bedding, and brushed nickel or black metal fittings. Good beside a narrow console or at the end of a corridor. Browse more Mediterranean art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
