About Saharan Mix II

A square collage builds layer on layer. Large white palm fronds run diagonally through the centre and lower right, their spines drawn as fine ribs against darker ground. Behind them sit blocks of pattern: a gold damask hexagon at the upper right, a second gold and red ornamental panel on the left, and scrolling white lace motifs at the top and right edge. Deep purple, brick red and olive green fill the gaps, broken by fine diagonal pinstripes and a black and white zebra-like fragment in the top left corner.

The character is busy and graphic, more cut-paper poster than landscape, with flat screen-printed colour and hard-edged shapes that overlap rather than blend. Texture comes from the printed stripes and the slightly grainy, faded surface of the coloured panels.

Works in a living room or dining room where the walls are plain white or a soft grey, so the reds and golds carry the space on their own.
