About Sailboat I
A single-masted model yacht sits centred in a square frame, resting on a pale timber cradle with two angled legs. The hull is split between a bright red topside and a cream keel, with a row of small dark portholes and deck fittings running along its length. Three sails rise above it: a slate-blue jib, a mustard staysail and a large cream mainsail broken into soft horizontal bands. Fine rigging lines run from the masthead, and a small yellow pennant flies at the top with a blue flag to the right.
The background is vertical panelling in muted olive and grey-brown, with visible grain and seams between the boards, finished by a darker timber rail across the base. Surfaces look lightly worn and chalky, with soft edges rather than crisp outlines. The overall character is quiet and decorative rather than detailed marine illustration, closer to a well-loved boat model hung in a beach house hallway.
Suits a beach house hallway, a child's bedroom or a study with timber furniture. The olive and grey-brown background sits comfortably against white, linen or pale grey walls, and the red hull picks up rust and terracotta cushions. Hang it as a pair with another nautical square, or above a low bookshelf or bedhead. Browse more blue art, brown and earthy art, or read Art above the bed: what size and how high.
