About Sketchbook I
A single horse stands side-on in the lower half of this square composition, its head turned back towards the left and its tail cropped by the right edge. The body is drawn in thin charcoal-grey contour lines, with the mane, ears and fetlocks the darkest marks on the canvas. The coat is left almost bare, a soft pale grey that blends into the background so the legs seem to dissolve near the ground. Behind the animal, broad washes of cream, mustard-ochre and dove grey sit in horizontal bands.
The surface looks like a worked page: scraped patches, faint vertical scratch lines and dry, uneven mottling show through the pale layers. It has the quiet, unfinished feel of a study left partly resolved, calm and muted rather than decorative.
Suits bedrooms, hallways and home offices in neutral or country-style interiors, and works well in a beach house or a rural-themed living room. Pair it with oak or ash timber, linen bedding, jute rugs and off-white walls. The ochre notes sit comfortably beside brass lamps, leather chairs and dried grasses.
