A male cardinal fills the centre of this watercolour, shown side-on with its crest raised and its long tail stretching to the right edge. The body is a strong red that deepens to crimson along the belly, with a black mask around an orange beak. The bird's eye looks closed, giving it a settled, puffed-up look.
Behind it, loose washes of lime green and dark teal blur into a soft evergreen backdrop. White flecks of snow spatter across the bird and the background. The ground is pale snow built from blue, lilac and yellow-green washes, with soft shadows and visible paper texture. A small handwritten signature sits in the lower right corner.
