About Solitude One
A long-limbed woman sits on a pale ledge at the centre of the canvas, her legs crossing down and to the left in wide indigo flared trousers that fill the lower half of the painting. She wears a cream halter top, a short black bob and a simple necklace; her face is left blank, with only the hair and jaw suggested. Behind her head a cream and gold disc glows against a rust brown wall marked with a single spiral flower. To the left, a dark panel is ruled with pale blue vertical stripes, a stemmed cocktail glass set against it.
Flat bands of white, red and orange divide the foreground, where a deep blue armchair carries an incised flower drawn in thin blue line. Paint is applied in dry, scrubbed layers so the canvas weave shows through the red and cream blocks. The mood is quiet and self-contained, a fashionable figure caught mid-pause rather than posed.
Suits a bedroom above a low bedhead, a dressing area, or a hallway where the indigo and rust can carry a plain wall. Pairs with white or grey walls, warm timber, brass lamps and a navy or terracotta throw. Works well beside mid-century furniture and a single tall plant.
