About Square Cross
A square composition split by thin dark lines into uneven blocks, so the surface reads like a loose grid or a cross laid over the picture. The top left block is scarlet red with a black shape sitting inside it, while the top centre is scraped cream and grey and the top right is almost solid black. Below, a second red band sits beside deep bottle green, and the lower half moves through pale sage into mustard yellow with a small blue mark near the base.
Colour is dragged and scraped rather than laid flat, leaving streaks, dry patches and hints of the layer beneath showing through, particularly across the cream and sage areas. Fine scratched lines cut through the black upper right corner. The overall character is weathered and industrial, with the hot red squares holding the eye against the muted greens and blacks around them.
Works in a dining room above a sideboard, a study, or a bedroom with charcoal linen and timber. The red blocks pick up rust cushions or a terracotta pot, while the olive and cream suit concrete, brick or grey walls. Square format suits a chimney breast or a narrow wall between doorways.
