Three white buckets hold overflowing bunches of sunflowers, the blooms crowding the top two thirds of the picture. Petals are loose, pointed strokes of yellow and orange, and the centres are dark brown with touches of red and blue. Soft green leaves fill the gaps between the heads.
The lower third is mostly bare white paper. Violet and grey shadows spill from the buckets across the surface, and thin yellow drips run straight down to the bottom edge. The wet, bleeding watercolour edges give it a fresh, unfinished feel with plenty of open space below the flowers.
